We began with an ensemble complicité activity. We were challenged to connect with one another so much so that we could follow improvised movements at exactly the same time. I found this activity extremely useful as practice is how I learn best and the more we do ensemble activities, the more I understand the term complicité.

We also did some Suzuki techniques which helped us ground ourselves and connect and breathe with a rhythm. We put emphasis on different numbers when counting “1,2,3,4” whilst throwing ourselves forward with a clear rhythm.

After this, we began working on our ensemble audition pieces for Antigone. Last time, we had ideas that we decided were too abstract and “boring”.

Therefore, we took a risk and started all over again. We felt that this was the best choice so that we could have a piece to show that we actually liked.

We had some new ideas that were also too abstract for what we wanted. We asked Lauren for help and she suggested we do something more naturalistic. Not only would this make our piece more interesting, it would also allow us to develop individual characters far easier.

With Lauren’s initial idea that we developed, we managed to create the full performance from scratch in just 30 minutes. We were finally happy with it.

At the end of the session, Lauren taught us a new song with harmonies to the tune “Rose Rose Rose Red”. The “lyrics” are lines from the original Antigone.
